Blessed (happy, enviably fortunate, and spiritually prosperous–possessing the happiness produced by the experience of God’s favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His grace, regardless of their outward conditions) are the pure in heart, for they shall see God! Matthew 5:8 Amplified
One thing I consistently pray for is that God will keep my heart pure before Him. I want to see Him everywhere and in everything. God gave me a new heart and He has helped me to keep it pure. He gave me eyes to see the beauty all around me, a thankful attitude, and a renewed mind. You find what you look for in life. God has taught me to look for beauty. Where I once saw darkness, I now see light.
It is amazing what a new perspective can do; it changes everything. The exciting thing is that anyone who wants to can choose to have a positive perspective, it just takes a little training of the mind. The Bible tells us to take our thoughts captive in obedience to Christ. The first thing to realize about this is that we have the power to control our own minds. We don’t have to just let thoughts run through unrestrained. The second thing to understand is how our thoughts can be in obedience to Christ. Jesus wants us to live in peace and not to worry. He wants us to have thoughts of love and joy.
Knowing that we can control our thoughts and that our thoughts should be full of peace, love, joy, and gratitude helps us in our mission to have a positive perspective and see the beauty in life. When a negative thought enters the mind it is our job to refute it and intentionally think its antithesis. The way I trained my mind was with God’s Word. Romans 12:2 tells us “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” God’s Word, His truth and His love, can transform our minds.
For example if a thought enters my head telling me that I am worthless, I can refute it by thinking, “I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.” “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” “God loves me and delights in me.” If I am afraid I can think of the many times that God says to be strong and courageous, for He is with me wherever I go. If I feel deserted by God, I remember that God tells me He will never leave me nor forsake me. If I am anxious I remember Phillipians 4:6-7, which tells me to be anxious for nothing, but to thank God and give Him my request and His peace will come over me. If I am overwhelmed I remember that I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Phil 4:13
At first it might be a struggle to keep positive thoughts, but it will become easier and easier as you put it into practice. They don’t always have to be Bible verses, just think thoughts of peace, love, joy, and beauty. If you have to replay one word in your head over and over, that works too. The important thing is to fight the negative thoughts and beat the darkness with light. After a little while of doing this intentionally, your mind will start doing it automatically and it will become more natural. Pretty soon the first thing that comes into your head will be the positive way of seeing the situation, and you will notice that your mind has been renewed and your perspective transformed.
Another tactic to use in training your mind is whenever you start thinking of things you want and don’t have, or things that you feel sorry for yourself about; you need to switch it up immediately and start thinking of things you are thankful for. Being thankful brings joy and there is always something you can be thankful for.
I have seen a lot of darkness in my life, but I feel like a child again, with an innocent new perspective. It is amazing. I watch a butterfly flit past and I am delighted. I feel the sun shine on my face and it reminds me of God’s love always shining down on me. I see the rain and think of God’s goodness in watering the earth and making everything grow. A thunderstorm reminds me of God’s majesty and power. In everything I am thankful and I know that all God does, he does out of His great love.
Just ask God to purify your heart and transform your mind. He wants us to live in peace and to enjoy all the beauty of life that He provides. If you really want to live a joyful life, don’t worry about changing your circumstances. Change your perspective. You’ll see that as you rest in God and trust Him, He will smooth out the path before you, and guide you into all manner of blessings; but first, be thankful for what you have today and what God has already done in your life.
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1
Let this day be the first day of the rest of your life, in which you will embrace and enjoy all the blessings that God wants to lavish on you, and you will see the beauty all around.
