Good News

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.  Philippians 4:8

Although the news on television portrays all kinds of terrible things going on every day, making it look like all there is is bad everywhere, there are just as many good and wonderful things going on every day as well.  As the verse above tells us, it is important that the good things are our focus, not the bad things in life.  Every day there are people helping others, loving others, going out into the world to share the good news of redemption through Jesus Christ with others, and being shining lights to the world.  There are so many good things happening and it is important that we recognize and seek out the good in life, instead of letting the negativity get us down.  Basically you find what you seek in life.  Seek God, seek good, seek love, truth and beauty and that is what you will find.

This past Sunday in church I talked to a person who was stuck in alcoholism for years and is now free; another person who had a lot of health issues and couldn’t walk for a time and is now standing, walking, and praising God; someone else who was supposed to have surgery on his leg and after his friends prayed for him, he went back to the doctor and the doctor said he no longer needed the surgery; another person who was suicidal eight months ago and is now looking forward to the great life ahead of him with hope and expectation; someone else who had been stuck in legalism for a while and was about to give up on faith a year ago and is now walking in Christ’s freedom with joy; another person who was struggling with her son and saw no way out for him and is now celebrating his entrance into the army and her own new beginning in life; and many people who were once broken and unloved and are now experiencing the redeeming power of God and basking in His unconditional love.

These are just a few of the wonderful things that God is doing in the lives of His children.  I am so blessed to be one of the redeemed, one of the people who was stuck in darkness and brought into light.  Walking with God and with other Christ followers, I get to see so much beauty, love, and kindness in people.  I have been absolutely wowed numerous times by the kindnesses that people have extended to myself and to others because of the spirit of love that God has put in all our hearts.

I challenge you to be on the lookout for goodness today.  Someone may drop something and another person bend down to help them pick it up.  Praise God!  A car may let someone in in front of them.  Praise God!  Smiles, hugs, sunshine, flowers, beautiful clouds, flitting butterflies, soaring birds.  Praise God!  Your own desire to be a blessing to someone else.  Praise God!  There are so many things to praise God for and so many acts of kindness that we witness every day.  Let’s be more focused on celebrating the good things in life instead of worrying about the not so good things.  Try finding the good in the situations that are difficult as well.  There is always good to be found if you look hard enough.

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!  Psalm 118:24

Erica, that verse is one of the first I ever memorized many years ago! “This IS the day the Lord has made…” “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; [His compassions never fail], they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.” ” Lamentations 3:22-24. There is so much to rejoice about…”Make the most of every opportunity.” Colossians 4:5. You are so right! If we keep our eyes open and seek Him, God is everywhere! He fills our hearts with gladness and joy! God bless!
